Meeting the Health Care Needs of Transgender People This archived webinar from The National LGBT Health Education Center discussed clinical issues and health disparities facing the transgender community, and suggested how they can be improved through educational and organizational change. Sample topics include developing a better understanding of transgender identities and lives; creating a welcoming and gender-affirming environment for transgender patients and staff; and learning ways to use and document patient names and pronouns in clinical records. Providing Cross-Gender Hormone Therapy for Transgender Patients This intermediate level archived webinar from The National LGBT Health Education Center is for health care providers interested in delivering effective, culturally responsive cross-gender hormone therapy for transgender patients. The webinar is led by Dr. Gal Mayer, who as medical director of Callen-Lorde Community Health Center — New York City’s LGBT Health Center — oversaw the care of over 1600 transgender patients. Dr. Mayer walks participants through the current protocols for treating patients with cross-gender hormone therapy, including a discussion of assessment, effects, benefits, risks, and administration. Throughout, Dr. Mayer explains how to offer these treatments in a way that shows the greatest sensitivity and respect towards transgender patients. These policies address the issues of confidentiality, non-discrimination, room assignments, bathroom access, and admitting/registration procedures – issues that, when mishandled, become barriers to health care for transgender patients.
