Vision:
Quality, affirming healthcare for all members of the transgender community.
Mission:
Transgender Health Alliance of Central Virginia works to ensure affordable, respectful, comprehensive healthcare for every member of the transgender community through education, advocacy, and outreach.
History:
In May 2014, health care providers and clinic directors from Thrive Healthcare and UVA Teen & Young Adult Health Center met with board members from PFLAG Blue Ridge to discuss health care needs and services for the transgender population in the greater Charlottesville area. In the following months, attendees of that meeting reached out to colleagues and contacts in the local medical and mental health community and learned that there is an eagerness among practitioners for education to better serve their transgender patients, combined with a well-known desperate need within the transgender community for improved access to health services -- particularly for lower-income and uninsured patients as well as those whose insurance policies exclude transgender care. Following a presentation from Dr. Lisa Griffin, Ph.D. in September 2014 on the mechanics of forming a community transgender health alliance, THACVA was officially formed and our mission, vision, and goals agreed upon. Our first members committed to Alliance membership in November 2014.
